Carousels:  5th grade artists created carousel paintings using tempera, permanent markers and paint pens.  There were many steps involved in creating these magnificent carousels.  Students learned about drawing figures in proportion, sketched 4 different carousel designs, picked their best one and drew an enlarged version of that design.  The enlarged carousel sketches were then painted with tempera, using colors to depict certain moods or atmospheres associated with the students' design concepts. Permanent markers and paint pens were then used to add small details and visual interest to these dynamic, colorful Carousels.

Clay Face Jugs

Fifth graders also created face jugs out of clay.  These jugs are bisque fired, awaiting glazing once the student decides on colors.  Students studied the uses, styles and designs associated with the Face Jugs created and used in the southern United States.  Artists first sketched their Southern Face Jug designs, concentrating on showing emotion in the face or faces they included on the jugs.  Students then learned coil pot techniques and constructed the jugs using those skills.  They also learned how to slip and score the clay to add designs to the surface of the jugs as well as techniques to carve designs into the clay.
